Rights Assignment

  1. My right is the freedom of speech- Liberty to express opinions and ideas without hindrance, and especially without fear of punishment. *http://www.answers.com/topic/freedom-of-speech
  2. My right exists because it is recognized as a human right under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognized in international human rights law in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). It also exists because people couldn't partake in public decision-making if they couldn't express their views freely. *http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_speech *http://www.hrea.org/index.php?base_id=147
  3. Exercising freedom of speech means to express your opinions, even if they differ from others'. It also means speaking up for what you believe and what you want, and possibly trying to persuade others to follow in your beliefs and footsteps as well. *http://politics.theatlantic.com/2009/04/lieberman_exercises_freedom_of_speech.php *http://www.duluthcitizensblog.com/
  4. There are no specific limitations to freedom of speech, however, it is said to avoid unnecessary danger. *http://www.hrcr.org/chart/limitations+duties/limits_specific.html

FALSE! After looking more into depth, I found that there are limitations! They are defamation (harmful words to one's reputation), causing panic (fake emercency), fighting words, incitement to crime (incite someone else to commit crime), sedition, obscenity, offense, and establishment of religion. *http://www.csulb.edu/~jvancamp/freedom1.html *http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data/constitution/amendment01/06.html

5. I took this first article to mean that freedom of speech has no interference. If there were, it would violate Article 19. *http://www2.ohchr.org/english/issues/opinion/articles1920_iccpr/docs/experts_papers/Schmidt.doc

The limitations from #4 exist because they are consistant with the harm principal. This way everyone can be happy! *http://www.csulb.edu/~jvancamp/freedom1.html

6. If I had to give up the right to freedom of speech, I would want, in return, freedom of the press. If I couldn't express my opinions by word of mouth, I'd at least want to express them by writing.

An Invonvenient Truth- Fact #5

Fact 5: It is projected that in less than 50 years there will be enough CO2 to kill the Earth.
Source 1: http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/scarewatch/6_billion.html This source is by a group of Climate Research which makes it credible. The source says that CO2 levels will raise the overall degree fahreheit by 7. This will kill all but 1 billion of Earth's population over the next century (100 years..NOT LESS THAN 50). I agree with this article because it is credible and less than 50 years seems to short to kill Earth.
Source 2: http://www.co2science.org/articles/V5/N12/EDIT.php This source is from an encyclopedia so it is credible. It says that coral reef production decreased by 11% in 1880 and could reach 35% in 2100 (100 years..not 50 years). The coral production decreased due to increased CO2 production. I agree with this source because it is credible and I can infer that the Earth could be killed in the next 100 years (if no action is taken now) due to the continuation of CO2 production.
Source 3: http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/sciencetech/carbon-dioxide-might-cause-deaths/670 This source was written by Mark Jacobson, a Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor at Stanford which makes it credible. It, too, says that Earth's population will die when temperatures rise due to CO2 levels rising due to global warming. It said this will occur over the next century (NOT LIMITED TO LESS THAN 50 YEARS). I agree with this article because it is credible and it's the third proof I've had to support that the Earth won't necessarily die in less than 50 years.

An Inconvenient Truth- Fact #4

Fact 4: The U.S. is responsible for most of global warming, more than any other country.
Source 1: http://www.articlemyriad.com/global_warming_united_states.htm This source is not credible at all because no names are given and a writer tried to "sweet talk." The source said that greenhouse gases have risen 70% from 1970-2004 and that the U.S. uses non-renewable resourses way out of proportion to our population. I do know that the U.S. should use more eco-friendly products, but I have a hard time believing we are the worst in the world! As much as I would like to believe this to improve our world, I can't because the article is not credible and I want to see examples.
Source 2: http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids/energyfacts/sources/non-renewable/oil.html This source is credible because it was produced by the energy administration. It states that the U.S. uses a high quantity of petrolium products, which are non-renewable. These oils and gases are a leading cause in global warming. I agree because this is a fact, it just states that the U.S. uses these products and I've seen it for myself.
Source 3: http://ecologicalproblems.blogspot.com/2008/02/usa-mainly-responsible-for-global.html This source is an Ad by Google which makes me think its not too credible. This article says that the U.S. produces 25% of greenhouse gases and is only sadly 9% of Earth. It also says that we are to be blamed for global warming and yet we are the least affected by it. I agree and diagree with this. There are other countries way worse affected by the effects of global warming the the U.S. (like hurricanes). However, Katrina hit the U.S. pretty hard.

An Inconvenient Truth- Fact #3

Fact 3: When Earth is on its axis and faces the Sun (summer), CO2 levels rise (= increasing global warming b/c CO2 traps the Sun's rays in the atmosphere), and when if faces away from the sun (winter), CO2 levels drop.
Source 1: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Astronomy-1360/earths-axis-global-warming.htm This source is by Philip Stahl. I'm not really sure how credible it is because it says he has experience in science, but only a degree in physics. Stahl says that there is no evidence that Earth's axis plays any role in global warming; it's all due to "man-made greenhouse gases". *This source goes against Fact 3. I personally don't agree with the source because it's not very credible and I believe that global warming is affected by both man-made gases and the CO2 levels that trap the Sun's rays (due to Earth's tilted axis).
Source 2: http://books.google.com/books?id=s2lkQiXo3pMC&pg=PA117&lpg=PA117&dq=CO2+levels+%2B+Earth's+axis&source=bl&ots=ZLRiwLs5-n&sig=fLvLbIC-sMPIicjSUFrhGl81iyU&hl=en&ei=2HPmSdKBOeT8nQe_l4SUBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2#PPP1,M1
This source is a book by Thomas L. Friedman, an expert on political science and I think it is a credible source. The source says that Earth has a lot of Co2 in its atmosphere. It also says thatover long periods of time, the Earth's tilt changes about two degrees which increases or decreases the sun radiation in different places according to seasons. *This source agrees with Fact 3. I agree with the source because increase or decrease in radiation + Co2 = trapped heat.
Source 3: http://www.topnews.in/rising-atmospheric-co2-levels-affecting-stability-west-antarctic-ice-sheet-2141674 This source was written after data was collected by a team of 56 scientists which I believe make it very credible. *The source agrees with Fact 3. It directs the rise of CO2, as a result of global warming and Earth's tilt, to the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (and how its in danger of melting). I agree with this because its a credible source and I realize global warming due to CO2 levels is dangerous.

An Inconvenient Truth- Fact #2

Fact 2: Records for hurricanes were set in 2004 and 2005 due to global warming.

Source 1: http://www.marklynas.org/2006/6/22/record-hurricane-season-was-fueled-by-global-warming The source by Mark Lynas quotes men and women from the Nation Center of Atmospheric Research on how global warming affects hurricanes. I belive the article is credible. The article says that more hurricanes occurred due to the heated water (due to global warming). It also says that global warming increases the risk of many more hurricanes in the future. I agree with this source because global warming increases Earth's overall heat, which would lead to more and more hurricane which thrive off of heated waters.

Source 2: (research what heated water has to do with hurricanes happening) http://www.weatherwizkids.com/hurricane1.htm The source was created by Meteorologist Crystal Wicker so I believe this source is credible. I read earlier that hurricanes need warm water to occur and this article told me why. It told me that warm water gives the hurricane energy and power to occur. I agree with this source because I learned in science that warmth gives off energy.
Source 3: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Atlantic_hurricane_season The source is by Wikipedia which is usually a reliable source so I think it is credible. The source said that the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active since recorded history. This broke many records. I agree with this because for records to be broke, the temperatures in 2005 had to have been record hot as well, leaving only global warming as the result.

An Inconvenient Truth- Fact #1

Fact 1: India could reach 122 degrees Fahrenheit due to global warming.
Sources 1: http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/india-news/northeastern-india-may-sizzle-at-50-degree-celsius-by-end-of-21st-century_10083387.html The sourse has information from Scientists from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute so the source is credible. They use a statistical method to suggest that by the end of this century, temperatures may reach 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees F) in northeastern India. I believe the source because I think global warming is continually making Earth hotter and hotter.
Source 2: http://www.onthebrink.org/evidencewea.html The source has information from a movie team called On The Brink (read to find out more). I believe it is a credible source because of all the school degrees and studies the team completed. The article tells us that the increased heat waves are due to doubling CO2 levels expected in the future from industry. It also said this is what will cause India to rise in heat. I believe the source because CO2 traps a lot of heat, which is what global warming is.
Source 3: http://climateprogress.org/2008/07/31/when-can-we-expect-extremely-high-surface-temperatures/ The source has information from The New York Times which makes me uneasy about whether or not it's credible. The source tells us that "extremes rise faster then the means in a warming climate." It also says that these extreme temperatures would be threatening to many countries, like India and possible allow it to reach 122 degrees F. I agree with this source, however, I can't fully belive it because I don't know how credible it is.

Middle East Conflict- Egypt

  1. Egypt got involved in the Arab-Israeli conflict when Palestine was divided into one Jewish and one Arab land. Egypt, and other nations, declared war on Israel in 1948 saying the land was Arabian, not Jewish. http://www.ibiblio.org/kelly/writings/nonfiction/history/hist18.html

  2. Between 1948 and the present, Egypt closed straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping and dismissed UN peacekeeping force(1967), Egyptianair force destroyed by Irsael(1967), retook Suez canal from Israel(1973), signed peace treaty withIsrael(1979), Egyptian President assassinated(1981), Israeli/Lebanon terrorist war- rocket damages one Egyptian ship(2006), President Bush visited MIddle East and Hamas "brokeout" into Egypt at Rafah Crossing(2008). http://www.zionism-israel.com/zionism_timeline.htm

  3. Israel is our enemy in the Middle East because they are trying to expand their territory and we don't like that, especially since we are Arab, not Jewish. (enemy-France and Great Britain b/c just recently got independence from them http://www.historyguy.com/suez_war_1956.html) The U.S. is our enemy, too, because they are in an alliance with Israel. http://samsonblinded.org/titles/Israel_war_resolve.htm

  4. Our friend in the Middle East is Palestine because they help us fight Israel and we allow them to attack Israel from Egyptian territory. Syria is also our friend because they are Arab. http://www.historyguy.com/suez_war_1956.html
  5. Out of the conflict, our country wants to keep the land we believe is rightfully ours and should stay Arabian. We also want peace, but UN peacekeepers were removed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six-Day_War
  6. We are prepared to give up free passage to Israel for the Suez Canal to get the peace treaty we wanted. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel-Egypt_Peace_Treaty
  7. We are not prepared to give up our land just to make Israel happy and end the war to make peace. http://english.aljazeera.net/focus/2009/03/200932341410342402.html

Reflection Post

  1. I learned that there are different types of concentration camps. I also learned how life was like in all of these camps (including treatment, categorization, etc.).
  2. My research question was: What was life like in concentration camps during the Holocaust?
  3. The answer to my question was that life was terrible. Prisoners were starved, beaten, killed, experimented on, and women were often raped. The camps were very unsanitary as well.
  4. Yes, my final product did answer that question.
  5. How? Because I made a scrapbook with pictures and all the research information I found on my topic.
  6. On the project, I believe I did well on getting good pictures and very detailed information.
  7. I could have improved the sizing and the way the printings fit into the scrapbook.
  8. On my project, I don't believe I would change anything other than what I said in number seven.
  9. On the assignment itself, I wouldn't change anything. I loved how we got to choose our own topic! I was much more involved and interested this way, I think!
  10. I think I deserve an A on the project because I worked very hard inside and outside of class. I met all of the requirements for the project. I was creative, too! I also gave detailed information and made the project "pop" with pictures.
