Info: A Hukou refers to the system of residency permits which dates back to ancient China, where household registration is required by law in People's Republic of China and Republic of China. A household registration record officially identifies a person as a resident of an area and includes identifying information such the name of the person, date of birth, the names of parents, and name of spouse, if married. **Refering back to previous post, this probably would interfere with migrant construction pay because they move around and aren't a resident necessarily of one particular area.

Rights Assignment
- My right is the freedom of speech- Liberty to express opinions and ideas without hindrance, and especially without fear of punishment. *http://www.answers.com/topic/freedom-of-speech
- My right exists because it is recognized as a human right under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognized in international human rights law in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). It also exists because people couldn't partake in public decision-making if they couldn't express their views freely. *http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_speech *http://www.hrea.org/index.php?base_id=147
- Exercising freedom of speech means to express your opinions, even if they differ from others'. It also means speaking up for what you believe and what you want, and possibly trying to persuade others to follow in your beliefs and footsteps as well. *http://politics.theatlantic.com/2009/04/lieberman_exercises_freedom_of_speech.php *http://www.duluthcitizensblog.com/
- There are no specific limitations to freedom of speech, however, it is said to avoid unnecessary danger. *http://www.hrcr.org/chart/limitations+duties/limits_specific.html
FALSE! After looking more into depth, I found that there are limitations! They are defamation (harmful words to one's reputation), causing panic (fake emercency), fighting words, incitement to crime (incite someone else to commit crime), sedition, obscenity, offense, and establishment of religion. *http://www.csulb.edu/~jvancamp/freedom1.html *http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data/constitution/amendment01/06.html
5. I took this first article to mean that freedom of speech has no interference. If there were, it would violate Article 19. *http://www2.ohchr.org/english/issues/opinion/articles1920_iccpr/docs/experts_papers/Schmidt.doc
The limitations from #4 exist because they are consistant with the harm principal. This way everyone can be happy! *http://www.csulb.edu/~jvancamp/freedom1.html
6. If I had to give up the right to freedom of speech, I would want, in return, freedom of the press. If I couldn't express my opinions by word of mouth, I'd at least want to express them by writing.

An Invonvenient Truth- Fact #5
Source 1: http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/scarewatch/6_billion.html This source is by a group of Climate Research which makes it credible. The source says that CO2 levels will raise the overall degree fahreheit by 7. This will kill all but 1 billion of Earth's population over the next century (100 years..NOT LESS THAN 50). I agree with this article because it is credible and less than 50 years seems to short to kill Earth.
Source 2: http://www.co2science.org/articles/V5/N12/EDIT.php This source is from an encyclopedia so it is credible. It says that coral reef production decreased by 11% in 1880 and could reach 35% in 2100 (100 years..not 50 years). The coral production decreased due to increased CO2 production. I agree with this source because it is credible and I can infer that the Earth could be killed in the next 100 years (if no action is taken now) due to the continuation of CO2 production.
Source 3: http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/sciencetech/carbon-dioxide-might-cause-deaths/670 This source was written by Mark Jacobson, a Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor at Stanford which makes it credible. It, too, says that Earth's population will die when temperatures rise due to CO2 levels rising due to global warming. It said this will occur over the next century (NOT LIMITED TO LESS THAN 50 YEARS). I agree with this article because it is credible and it's the third proof I've had to support that the Earth won't necessarily die in less than 50 years.

An Inconvenient Truth- Fact #4
Source 1: http://www.articlemyriad.com/global_warming_united_states.htm This source is not credible at all because no names are given and a writer tried to "sweet talk." The source said that greenhouse gases have risen 70% from 1970-2004 and that the U.S. uses non-renewable resourses way out of proportion to our population. I do know that the U.S. should use more eco-friendly products, but I have a hard time believing we are the worst in the world! As much as I would like to believe this to improve our world, I can't because the article is not credible and I want to see examples.
Source 2: http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids/energyfacts/sources/non-renewable/oil.html This source is credible because it was produced by the energy administration. It states that the U.S. uses a high quantity of petrolium products, which are non-renewable. These oils and gases are a leading cause in global warming. I agree because this is a fact, it just states that the U.S. uses these products and I've seen it for myself.
Source 3: http://ecologicalproblems.blogspot.com/2008/02/usa-mainly-responsible-for-global.html This source is an Ad by Google which makes me think its not too credible. This article says that the U.S. produces 25% of greenhouse gases and is only sadly 9% of Earth. It also says that we are to be blamed for global warming and yet we are the least affected by it. I agree and diagree with this. There are other countries way worse affected by the effects of global warming the the U.S. (like hurricanes). However, Katrina hit the U.S. pretty hard.
An Inconvenient Truth- Fact #3
Source 1: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Astronomy-1360/earths-axis-global-warming.htm This source is by Philip Stahl. I'm not really sure how credible it is because it says he has experience in science, but only a degree in physics. Stahl says that there is no evidence that Earth's axis plays any role in global warming; it's all due to "man-made greenhouse gases". *This source goes against Fact 3. I personally don't agree with the source because it's not very credible and I believe that global warming is affected by both man-made gases and the CO2 levels that trap the Sun's rays (due to Earth's tilted axis).
Source 2: http://books.google.com/books?id=s2lkQiXo3pMC&pg=PA117&lpg=PA117&dq=CO2+levels+%2B+Earth's+axis&source=bl&ots=ZLRiwLs5-n&sig=fLvLbIC-sMPIicjSUFrhGl81iyU&hl=en&ei=2HPmSdKBOeT8nQe_l4SUBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2#PPP1,M1
This source is a book by Thomas L. Friedman, an expert on political science and I think it is a credible source. The source says that Earth has a lot of Co2 in its atmosphere. It also says thatover long periods of time, the Earth's tilt changes about two degrees which increases or decreases the sun radiation in different places according to seasons. *This source agrees with Fact 3. I agree with the source because increase or decrease in radiation + Co2 = trapped heat.
Source 3: http://www.topnews.in/rising-atmospheric-co2-levels-affecting-stability-west-antarctic-ice-sheet-2141674 This source was written after data was collected by a team of 56 scientists which I believe make it very credible. *The source agrees with Fact 3. It directs the rise of CO2, as a result of global warming and Earth's tilt, to the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (and how its in danger of melting). I agree with this because its a credible source and I realize global warming due to CO2 levels is dangerous.

An Inconvenient Truth- Fact #2
Source 1: http://www.marklynas.org/2006/6/22/record-hurricane-season-was-fueled-by-global-warming The source by Mark Lynas quotes men and women from the Nation Center of Atmospheric Research on how global warming affects hurricanes. I belive the article is credible. The article says that more hurricanes occurred due to the heated water (due to global warming). It also says that global warming increases the risk of many more hurricanes in the future. I agree with this source because global warming increases Earth's overall heat, which would lead to more and more hurricane which thrive off of heated waters.
Source 2: (research what heated water has to do with hurricanes happening) http://www.weatherwizkids.com/hurricane1.htm The source was created by Meteorologist Crystal Wicker so I believe this source is credible. I read earlier that hurricanes need warm water to occur and this article told me why. It told me that warm water gives the hurricane energy and power to occur. I agree with this source because I learned in science that warmth gives off energy.
Source 3: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Atlantic_hurricane_season The source is by Wikipedia which is usually a reliable source so I think it is credible. The source said that the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active since recorded history. This broke many records. I agree with this because for records to be broke, the temperatures in 2005 had to have been record hot as well, leaving only global warming as the result.
An Inconvenient Truth- Fact #1
Sources 1: http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/india-news/northeastern-india-may-sizzle-at-50-degree-celsius-by-end-of-21st-century_10083387.html The sourse has information from Scientists from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute so the source is credible. They use a statistical method to suggest that by the end of this century, temperatures may reach 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees F) in northeastern India. I believe the source because I think global warming is continually making Earth hotter and hotter.
Source 2: http://www.onthebrink.org/evidencewea.html The source has information from a movie team called On The Brink (read to find out more). I believe it is a credible source because of all the school degrees and studies the team completed. The article tells us that the increased heat waves are due to doubling CO2 levels expected in the future from industry. It also said this is what will cause India to rise in heat. I believe the source because CO2 traps a lot of heat, which is what global warming is.
Source 3: http://climateprogress.org/2008/07/31/when-can-we-expect-extremely-high-surface-temperatures/ The source has information from The New York Times which makes me uneasy about whether or not it's credible. The source tells us that "extremes rise faster then the means in a warming climate." It also says that these extreme temperatures would be threatening to many countries, like India and possible allow it to reach 122 degrees F. I agree with this source, however, I can't fully belive it because I don't know how credible it is.

Middle East Conflict- Egypt
- Egypt got involved in the Arab-Israeli conflict when Palestine was divided into one Jewish and one Arab land. Egypt, and other nations, declared war on Israel in 1948 saying the land was Arabian, not Jewish. http://www.ibiblio.org/kelly/writings/nonfiction/history/hist18.html
- Between 1948 and the present, Egypt closed straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping and dismissed UN peacekeeping force(1967), Egyptianair force destroyed by Irsael(1967), retook Suez canal from Israel(1973), signed peace treaty withIsrael(1979), Egyptian President assassinated(1981), Israeli/Lebanon terrorist war- rocket damages one Egyptian ship(2006), President Bush visited MIddle East and Hamas "brokeout" into Egypt at Rafah Crossing(2008). http://www.zionism-israel.com/zionism_timeline.htm
- Israel is our enemy in the Middle East because they are trying to expand their territory and we don't like that, especially since we are Arab, not Jewish. (enemy-France and Great Britain b/c just recently got independence from them http://www.historyguy.com/suez_war_1956.html) The U.S. is our enemy, too, because they are in an alliance with Israel. http://samsonblinded.org/titles/Israel_war_resolve.htm
- Our friend in the Middle East is Palestine because they help us fight Israel and we allow them to attack Israel from Egyptian territory. Syria is also our friend because they are Arab. http://www.historyguy.com/suez_war_1956.html
- Out of the conflict, our country wants to keep the land we believe is rightfully ours and should stay Arabian. We also want peace, but UN peacekeepers were removed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six-Day_War
- We are prepared to give up free passage to Israel for the Suez Canal to get the peace treaty we wanted. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel-Egypt_Peace_Treaty
- We are not prepared to give up our land just to make Israel happy and end the war to make peace. http://english.aljazeera.net/focus/2009/03/200932341410342402.html

Reflection Post
- I learned that there are different types of concentration camps. I also learned how life was like in all of these camps (including treatment, categorization, etc.).
- My research question was: What was life like in concentration camps during the Holocaust?
- The answer to my question was that life was terrible. Prisoners were starved, beaten, killed, experimented on, and women were often raped. The camps were very unsanitary as well.
- Yes, my final product did answer that question.
- How? Because I made a scrapbook with pictures and all the research information I found on my topic.
- On the project, I believe I did well on getting good pictures and very detailed information.
- I could have improved the sizing and the way the printings fit into the scrapbook.
- On my project, I don't believe I would change anything other than what I said in number seven.
- On the assignment itself, I wouldn't change anything. I loved how we got to choose our own topic! I was much more involved and interested this way, I think!
- I think I deserve an A on the project because I worked very hard inside and outside of class. I met all of the requirements for the project. I was creative, too! I also gave detailed information and made the project "pop" with pictures.

- My Next Action entering into the day was to finish my Index Cards.
- Today I did finished my index cards so I can move forward with my project. I also found a lot more pictures.
- What I did today helps answer my research question because I found out what goes on in extermination camps with workers and prisoners.
- My Next Action is to organize my scrapbook project plan next class for Exhibit Night.
Extermination camp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Summary: Extermination camps' main purpose was genocide, the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group. After prisoners were killed, the Nazis would take their money, diamonds, and even gold teeth. Workers would smoke on the job (even in crematoria), workers would act as if nothing happened if saw dead relative or even wife!!!! Terrible scream occurred led by being shot, some people revealed others in hiding and still were taken away to be killed.
Quotes: Captain Wirth said: “See for yourself the weight of that gold! It’s only from yesterday and the day before. You can’t imagine what we find every day—dollars, diamonds, gold. You’ll see for yourself!”

- My Next Step entering into the day was to continue researching and find more pictures.
- Today, I accomplished both. I found out all the different types of concentration camps and found pictures as well.
- What I did today helps answer my research question because there are multiple types of concentration camps and today I found out what went on in all of them.
- My Next Action is to finish my Index Cards and Daily Progress Posts next class so I can move on to finish my project.
Life in a Concentration Camp
Summary: Barracks helds beds stacks 3-4 with little room to move. "Children that survived
did so because they were hidden in homes, basements and convents (religious community)
or lived with Christian families who concealed their identities."
Holocaust-Concentration Camps
Summary: Every escaped captured prisoner of war was sent to the extermination camps to be killed. These two rules were to be followed: 1. All captured escapees were to be turned over to th Chief of the Security Police whether it was a large group or individual. 2. No one on the outside must be informed of the POW's capture.
Transit Camps of the Holocaust - Vught - Holocaust Research Project ...
Summary: Transit camps of the Holocaust were camps for political prisoners as well as some Jews. There were working and living barracks, watchtowers, and barbed wires just like in concentration camps, forced labor camps, extermination or death camps, and prisoner-of-war camps. The living conditions of all camps were brutal.

Holocaust Timeline: The Camps
Summary: "In the beginning of the systematic mass murder of Jews, Nazis used mobile killing squads called Einsatzgruppen. The Einsatzgruppen consisted of four units of between 500 and 900 men each which followed the invading German troops into the Soviet Union."
"There were concentration camps, forced labor camps, extermination or death camps, transit camps, and prisoner-of-war camps. The living conditions of all camps were brutal."

Daily Progress Post #8
- My Next Action entering into the day was to continue researching daily life in concentration camps.
- Today I completed 22 Index cards and now I'm working on my 8th daily progress post. I found many pictures for my scrapbook and I found out a little more about daily life as well.
- What I did today helps answer my research question because I found out that there are not only camps where people went to work and die, but also camps where people were sent and released if the disagreed politically with the Nazis.
- My Next Action is to continue researching and looking for more pictures. Also, I need to prepare to be almost finished with my index cards and daily posts.
Life in the Dachau concentration camp - photo of first prisoners
Summary: Not all prisons in camps had to wear the striped uniforms, just the classification. Where prisoners are held and sleep are known as barracks. Prisoners who didn't politically agree with the Nazis were sent to Dachau; once they were "rehabilitated, their belongings were returned and they could leave. Food was a little better here than in extermination camps, but not treatment.
Status Report
2. For my project, I still have to get a total of 30 Index cards, a total of 10 daily progress posts, and I have to complete my scrapbook neatly and creatively for Exhibit Night.
3. Finding websites that don't have repeatative information is harder than I thought it would be.
4. Finding survivor reports is easier than I thought it would be.
5. I don't think I would do anything differently if I could start my project over again. I like the way everything has worked out so far.
6. Before Spring Break, I need to have all of my Index cards and Daily Progress posts finished. I also need to have all my scrapbook materials gathered to be able to work on my project over Spring Break. Lastly, my research information and pictures need to be organized into the order I want them to be in my scrapbook.

Daily Progress Post #7
- My Next Action entering into the day was to continue researching my topic and to get survivor accounts if needed or wanted.
- Today I got a total of 18 Index cards. I found a few pictures, new information about clothing worn in the camps, and survivor accounts about daily life.
- What I did today helps answer my research question because I again got a factual, survivor account. Also, since I found pictures, that with help me with my end project which is a scrapbook.
- My Next Action is to keep looking for more pictures for my scrapbook as well as continuing my research.
Holocaust survivor dislpays camp collection
Summary: People in the camps saw cold-blooded murder and most were separated from family. To stay alive during inspections, some would sufficate themselves with rope to rush blood to their heads (hiding yellow skin discoloration). Laundry workers would sometimes find valuables in inmate's striped clothing (diamond rings, gold watches and large emeralds).
Quotes: " [Hack] saw cold-blooded murder, smelled the gas chamber and saw babies burned. He was given a number, 73,688, which is still visible on his left arm."
"I was a piece of meat. I was not human. I had no feeling. I have no sense, no enjoyment," he said. "You are like a robot. I didn't have any sympathy. I know through and through what they can do to you. I wanted to save my life."
WW2DB: Discovery of Concentration Camps and the Holocaust
Summary: Men's and women's clothing, glasses, and dentures were taken from them upon arrival into the camps. Women's hair was taken. Clothing consisted of burlap cloth (also what they used to cover up with when cold) and wooden shoes.
Nazi concentration camps - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Summary: "Prisoners were often transported in inhumane conditions by rail freight cars, in which many died before reaching their destination. The prisoners were confined to the rail cars, often for days or weeks, without food or water. Many died of dehydration in the intense heat of summer or froze to death in winter. Small subcamps were set up near factories to provide forced labour. A synthetic rubber plant in 1942, at Monowitz concentration camp (Auschwitz III); other camps were set up next to airplane factories, coal mines and rocket propellant plants. Conditions were brutal and prisoners were often sent to the gas chambers or killed, if they did not work fast enough. Near the end of the war, the camps became sites for horrific medical experiments. Eugenics experiments, freezing prisoners to determine how exposure affected pilots, and experimental and lethal medicines were all tried at various camps. Female prisoners were routinely raped and degraded in the camps."

Daily Progress Post #6
- My Next Action entering into the day was to find any other research info., whether it be survivor accounts or not.
- Today I found a total of 14 Index Cards with information from survivors and websites and I posted them on my blog and on delicious.
- What I did today helps answer my research question becuase I found more factual survivor accounts and I found out that the prisoners in camps were categorized.
- My Next Action is to continue researching during class and at home if necessary.
CONCENTRATION CAMPS, 1933-1939
Summary: SS men had to wear symbols in everyday life as a way of showing their assigned camp people who they were. "Although all SS units wore the Death's-Head symbol (skull and crossbones) on their caps, only the SS Death's-Head Units were authorized to wear the Death's Head Symbol on their lapels." These people were most likely in charge of most murders.?
Nazi Camps
Summary: In the camp Birkenau, up to 6,000 Jews were gased a day as a way to make it more impersonal for the person doing the job.
Holocaust Survivors-Encyclopedia
Summary: To determine treatment of the people in camps, they categorized the people. The Jews wore yellow triangles. Guards and kapos could be bribed (for food I guess) with cigarettes, food, or gold, if prisoners could get these items from camps jobs or connections. Roll calls took up a lot of time and sometimes selections accompanied them for exterminations. Food consisted of coffee, bread, and cabbage soup. Although some survived the Holocaust, they suffered from what today has become known as post-traumatic shock syndrome. Survival might depend on augmenting the standard food rations by bribery or by "connections" or by holding a special job in the camp kitchen, in the camp hospital, or in camp administration. Many camps did not provide adequate fresh water and the water was polluted.
Concentration Camps/ Holocaust: An End to Innocence
Summary: SS men called Einsatzgruppen would dig huge graves in forests, then line Jews up and shoot them. They were given lethal injections with what was called euthanasia, or "mercy-killing" until Zyklon B gas was made. Jewish police were known as "kapos" and they shot anyone in the camps who disobeyed. Many people committed suicide, liking throwing themselves into electric wres. If anyone escaped, everyone in their 'group' was instantly killed.
Quotes: In the late nineteenth century, the British historian Lord Acton observed, "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
The sanitary conditions were indescribable. There was one bathroom, always out of order, for a hut of four hundred people. ... From time to time we would get what they called "soup." Then they almost cut off the food supply altogether. ... Dead people lay outside on the paths of the camp. ... Women fought in the gutter for scraps of food garbage. [Testimony given at the Eichmann trial]
A shooting competition was begun between [two Nazi officers]. They would shoot out of their windows at the people marching back and forth loaded with stones, aiming at the tip of a nose or a finger. The injured people were "no good" any more and they would finish them off with a shot. [Testimony given at the Eichmann trial]

Daily Progress Post #5
- My Next Action entering into the day was to research survivor accounts on how life was in the concentration camps.
- Today I found three new websites, one on daily life for children, one on survivor accounts and one on how people managed to or tried to survive during the Holocaust.
- What I did today helps answer my research question because I got factual answers from survivors and I got information from a variety of age groups (children-adults).
- My Next Action is to continue researching whatever information I can find, whether it be survivor accounts or not.
The Holocaust: A Tragic Legacy - Eyewitness Accounts
Summary: In the camps there were posts of barbed wire with a huge sign that read, EXTREME DANGER, HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICAL WIRES. There were tall guard towers and men with machine guns were inside them. The bunks people slept in were in three tiers, lower, middle, and upper with a burlap mattress filled with straw. The food was terrible, there was never enough, and potatoes were the main ingredient. Played cards for something to do. People were shaved and lucky if they got a shower. Some had lice. Then they were tattooted numbers on their arm. Summer: heat was unbearable. Winter: steel workers froze to steel and tore skin off. Got beat if didn't finish work. No water and no bathrooms in barracks (living quarters in camps). Had to get up at 5 am every morning. Lost a lot of weight. Women's work typically easier than men's?
The Holocaust-Children During the Holocaust
Summary: Children were categorized into three groups, (1) infants and toddlers up to age 6; (2) young children ages 7 to 12; and (3) adolescents from 13 to 18 years old. The older children usually had a higher survival rate becuae they could do labor work. There were usually four fates of Jewish children in concentration camps: (1) those killed immediately on arrival in concentration camps and killing centers; (2) those killed shortly after birth (3) those few born in ghettos and camps and surviving; and (4) those children, usually above the age of 10, utilized as prisoners, laborers, and subjects for Nazi medical experiments. Some Jewish children survived by being part of an underground partisan resistance (against Nazis) as messangers, smugglers, and runners.
Daily Life During the Holocaust-www.praeger.com
Summary: Non-Jews in concentration camps included Gypsies, gays, clergy who protested or protected victims, Communists, Jehovah's Witnesses, the mentally ill and handicapped. In order to survive during the Holocaust, inmates had to avoid the infirmary, ration food, and utilize the "market" system to trade for goods and clothing.

Daily Progress Post #4
- My Next Action entering into the day was to continue researching what life was like in concentration camps during the Holocaust.
- Today I only got two new websites with new research. I was limited for time because of a counselor visit for the Plan test results.
- Today I found a website of a Holocaust survivor. This really helps my research question becuase I know the information given is credible.
- My Next action is to come to class next time and try to find more information from Holocaust survivors.
Coping with Life in a "Concentration" World
"He defines the concentration world as follows:
Life in ghettos, and in labour, concentration and extermination camps, life in the underground, life of those whose existence outside the ghetto boundaries depended on their forged "Aryan" papers, of those who hid with the peasants, and of those who lived in the constant expectation of imminent deportation . . . all forms of life-conditions during the Nazi reign of terror and mass-murder.( Dvorjetski 1963, 194)
The main purpose of forcing the Jews to live in such conditions wasto cause them to die."
*An article written by Marc Dvorjetski (holocaust survivor and directorof the Tel Aviv Institute for the Investigation of the Pathology of theHolocaust when his findings were published)
The Holocaust
Summary: At the camps, the treatment was extremely harsh and cruel. Everyone was either sick, starving, dying, or a slave laborer. They would die in many types of ways, like starvation, sickness, a machine gun, overworking your body, or gas chambers. There was even a firing wall in Auschwitz.

Daily Progress Post #3
- My Next Action entering into the day was to continue researching.
- Today I found three new websites for my Index Card Posts and saved them on delicious.com. I learned a lot of new information, too.
- What I did today helped answer my research question because I found what happened specifically to children in the camps as well as what happened to twins (this is just a sample of what I found today).
- My Next Action is to continue researching next class and keeping up with the grading system.
Auschwitz, Nazi death camp
Summary: Auschwitz-Birkenau became the killing center where the largest numbers of European Jews were killed during the Holocaust. Zyklon-B gas began at Auschwitz. Children were killed upon arrival (burned or gased). Mengele (Angel of Death) loved to experiment on twins and then he'd kill them. Clauberg injected women's wombs and they exploded in pain. October 1946 Nuremberg Medical Trials-some defendants found guilty of lethal experiments in camps and put in jail.
Quotes: Lucie Adelsberger describes the life of the children:
"Like the adults, the kids were only a mere bag of bones, without muscles or fat, and the thin skin like pergament scrubbed through and through beyond the hard bones of the skeleton and ignited itself to ulcerated wounds. Abscesses covered the underfed body from the top to the bottom and thus deprived it from the last rest of energy. The mouth was deeply gnawed by noma-abscesses, hollowed out the jaw and perforated the cheeks like cancer". Many decaying bodies were full of water because of the burning hunger, they swelled to shapeless bulks which could not move anymore. Diarrhoea, lasting for weeks, dissolved their irresistant bodies until nothing remained ....."
One twin recalls the death of his brother:
"Dr. Mengele had always been more interested in Tibi. I am not sure why - perhaps because he was the older twin. Mengele made several operations on Tibi. One surgery on his spine left my brother paralyzed. He could not walk anymore. Then they took out his sexual organs. After the fourth operation, I did not see Tibi anymore. I cannot tell you how I felt. It is impossible to put into words how I felt. They had taken away my father, my mother, my two older brothers - and now, my twin ..."
Life in the Concentration Camps-Associated Content
Summary: The disease, typhus, spread by lice in the constant traffic with the east, was actually the first cause of death in camps. It was passed by through rapid expansion of the camps in Poland, in 1941-1942. Since they couldn't be used for labor, extermination procedures were carried out--food taken away/starved, "showers", separated families.
Quotes: "Man's inhumanity to man." (by Robert Burns) "...there is no more horrific example of that...than the systematic herding together, then disposing of million s of Jews, Poles, Russians, Gypsies, homosexuals and those physically impaired." (by Werner Haas)
Tool Bar/The Camps
Summary: At first, camps were very chaotic. Methods of murder were inefficient and technology took awhile to develop. Larger gas chamber were made to hold more people, more efficient gas was used, body fat was used as a fuel to burn other bodies faster, and bone-crusher machines were made. These were all ways to dispose of bodies.

Daily Progress Post #2
Today I found two websites that helped answer my research question about how life was in camps during the Holocaust. I did a Research Index card for each of the websites and I did a bookmark for each website on delicious.com.
What I did today helped me answer my research question because I found how Jews, blacks, Gypsies, and others were treated and how they lived in the camps during the Holocaust.
My Next Action is to come to class next time and continue to find information for my research question. I also need to keep writing daily posts, research index card posts, and bookmarks.
The Holocaust: A Tragic Legacy- The Camps
Summary: Jews' lives were characterized by fear, mistretment, and suffering. In 1939 as WWII began, Hitler ordered the killing of handicapped people in concentration camps b/c incurable and a mass-killing of Jews and Gypies in the death camps called "euthanasia."
Life and treatment in death and concentration camps
Summary: Hitler blamed Jews for the defeat of WWI and decided to carry out what he called the 'Final Solution'. Jews, blacks, Gypsies and others unworhty of being pure Aryans were tricked or arrested and sent to death or concentration camps. Here they were shot, killed in gas chambers/vans, or forced to become laborers (usually died b/c harsh treatment). Auschwitz-Birkenau was a camp with both concentration and death camps built in Poland 1941.
